Indications
The use of DBS in patients with the following disorders of the motor system is already established and correspondingly effective:
- Parkinson’s disease
- Essential tremor
- Tremor in multiple sclerosis
- Dystonia
Rare forms of tremor or more complex movement disorders (Huntington’s disease, movement disorders after craniocerebral trauma etc.) are decided on a case-by-case basis.
Furthermore, the suitability of DBS for treating the following diseases is also being investigated through clinical studies conducted by our department:
Severe obsessive compulsive disorder,
Severe depression,
Tourette’s syndrome,
Addiction,
Cerebral seizure disorder (epilepsy).
As a general rule, treatment using deep brain stimulation is always expedient if medicinal treatment has not led to any significant improvement. The indications for DBS are always pinpointed by the stereotactic neurosurgeon in cooperation with specially trained neurologists or specially trained psychiatrists. We will be pleased to consider and discuss with you whether or not DBS treatment is suitable for you.
