Research
The Department of Stereotactic Neurosurgery focuses on the following areas of research:
Neuro-Oncology
- Analysis of molecular mechanisms of tumor development
- Analysis of particular characteristics of tumors (blood supply, vascular system, tumor proliferation) subject to their molecular composition;
- Development of new treatment methods such as “Convection Enhanced Delivery” (direct infusion of drugs into the brain tissue or tumor over the course of several days)
Functional stereotaxis
Clinical tests for the treatment of new indications using deep brain stimulation:
- Obsessive-compulsive disorders
- Severe depression
- Tourette’s syndrome
- Addiction
The development of new treatment strategies for functional diseases requires precise knowledge of the way in which the complex neuronal networks within the brain function. This aspect is being worked on through the involvement of the Department of Stereotactic Neurosurgery in the focal areas of neuroscientific research that are already established locally and through close cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology.
