Functional Stereotaxis
Deep Brain Stimulation
The objective of functional stereotactic operations is to improve brain functions that have been altered by certain diseases. To do this, high frequency electrical impulses (at least 130 Hz) are emitted continuously using fully implantable stimulation systems in the affected region of the brain (deep brain stimulation = DBS), which cause abnormal electrical discharges from diseased nerve cells to be interrupted. The stimulation system consists of brain electrodes, a connecting cable and an impulse generator similar to a cardiac pacemaker, which even after implantation can be programmed through the skin at any time.
