Stroke is the most frequent cause of moderate to severe physical disability in Germany. Cerebral infarction and intracerebral hemorrhages are causative.

Some of these patients will suffer from foot drop (paresis of the tibialis anterior muscle). If these patients are still sufficiently mobile and the foot drop is the main impairment, a neuroprosthesis may bring about a significant improvement in quality of life.  Many patients with this condition are provided with a peroneal splint, but suffer from pressure sores and contact allergies or are dissatisfied with the therapeutic result.

The system for stimulating the peroneal nerve was especially developed for this use and was unfortunately only available for a few years.

Despite the considerable clinical success in over 500 patients worldwide, including 45 at our clinic, this operation can no longer be offered, since the manufacturer decided to withdraw the product from the market at the end of 2016 for economic reasons.

As an alternative to an implant, for many patients there is the option of achieving an, at least, satisfactory improvement in their gait pattern through surface stimulation. Whether or not a patient would benefit from the use of surface stimulation can be investigated during an outpatient consultation.
